Ode To The Stuff Holder

hubbyYesterday was a big day for me – it was the 32nd year of my running every day!  I can’t believe that it’s been that long – it’s hard for me to believe that I’m that old :-) – but, I am!

I went for a 10 mile run and spent a lot of time during the run reflecting on the past 32 years of my streak running – and the 7 years before that when I started running.  I thought about the runs, the races, the ones that I’ve run with.  It was a great time of reflecting.

One of the things that I thought a lot about was my wonderful Hubby.  I couldn’t run every day and run in some of the places that I’ve run without his support.  There are so many runners (male and female) that don’t have the support of their significant others.  This makes me sad.  And, it makes me realize how blessed I am to have the support of my Hubby.

Years ago – there were several of us (all guys and me the lone female) who ran a 15 mile race in Charleston, West Virginia, every year.  It was always a fun weekend!  This race had a super pasta party in the Civic Center the night before – with all the beer you wanted.  Plus, a sit down lunch after the race – and yes, with all the beer you wanted!

Hubby and a few of my friends’ wives would hang out together during the race.  They’d go have breakfast and then meet us at different points along the race.  The first 5 miles of this race was a beast.  Mostly uphill.  Hubby would always be at mile 7 with a Pepsi for me!  It made the rest of the race so much better!

Anyway, our support crew we named the “Stuff Holders”.  This was because they held our “stuff” during the race and had what “stuff” we needed at the finish.  Sometimes it wasn’t much – but, some races – there was more to hold depending on the weather and if we needed dry or warm clothes after finishing.  I think they had a lot of fun together – I know Hubby did!

But, ya know…….stuff holders have a tough job.  They get up early to be at the starting line to see us off.  Then, they have to wait around – probably being really bored – until we finish.  During longer races, I know that Hubby will get up right before we leave for the start – then go back to the hotel to shower and get breakfast before meeting back up with me.

I sometimes feel guilty as I’m getting older.  Those 3 1/2 hour marathons have turned into 4 1/2 – 5 hours.  Half marathons have gone from 1:45 – 1:50 to 2:15 – 2:20.  But, Hubby never complains.  He even makes me feel better by saying that I’m still out there after all these years and that it doesn’t matter how long it takes me to finish.  I really love him for that.

But, he’s the one that’s out there waiting for me – in hot weather, cold weather, rain, sun.  No matter what.  I can always count on him being at the finish.  And, usually with my Pepsi!  :-)

Some people may think that stuff holders may have it easier than the runners.  But, ya know, I don’t think that they do.  We runners are moving – and yes, sometimes it’s easier than other times – but, standing for a long time can be really boring.  And, especially with my Hubby’s 4 knee replacements and bad back.  But, he never complains!

I love my stuff holder!  I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without him!  Give your stuff holder a little extra love and tell them how much they mean to you!
