Running Week In Review – February 11 – 17

It’s hard to believe that we are here at the end of a week already.  This one flew by.  Another good week of running – even with a few hiccups. To start off, my costochondritis has been acting up this week.  It started last Monday and hung on until the end of this week.  In case you’ve never heard of it (I hadn’t until I was diagnosed 2 years ago – here’s the definition: “Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage in the rib cage. The condition usually affects the cartilage where the upper ribs attach to the breastbone, or sternum, an area known as the costosternal joint or costosternal junction. Chest pain caused by costochondritis can range from mild to severe. Mild cases may only cause your chest to feel tender to touch or some pain when you push on the area of your chest cartilage. I’m a Heel Striker And Proud Of It!

Heel strikers.  We don’t get much love out there from a lot of people.  Many runners consider heel strikers to be newbies who don’t know the correct way to run. Well, I’m here to help you fellow heel strikers feel better about yourselves! I am a heel striker.  There, I’ve said it.  And, I’ve been a heel striker since I started running back in 1978.  There weren’t books, videos, self-proclaimed running experts on every corner telling us how to run.  We simply laced up our shoes and ran.  And, ran.  And, ran. Running Week In Review – February 4 – 10

Well, this was a week that I really pulled up my big girl panties for a couple of runs!   Monday – An easy 4 miles.  Nothing unusual.  Just a nice rest day run. Tuesday – 16 miles for long run day.  Normally I’m at Mom’s on Tuesday but I had just taken her back to her house over the weekend.  So, changed up my long run to today.  A little chilly – but, the run felt great!  Afterwards, went by the DQ and had Hubby fix me some lunch! Wednesday – 5 mile recovery run.  Another run that was pretty normal.  And nice and easy. Thursday – Easy 4 mile rest day.  Pretty cold, but run felt great! Friday – A frigid 6 miles.  One of those days that I normally would have hit the treadmill.  But, I decided to pull on a new pair of shoes and hit the road.  You know … {Continue Reading… }

Wow! That Was A Quick Month!

Where the crap did January go?  It seems like just yesterday it was the first of the year and I was planning for our annual trip South.  Then, boom – now it’s February! January was a pretty good month for running.  This is the month that I usually cut back a little on my mileage.  I believe that everyone should do that every once in a while.  You need to give your body a rest from hard training and to recharge your batteries. Wow – What A Year! Looking Forward to 2018!

Happy New Year! Well, here we are at the beginning of 2018.  This year has really flown by.  And, I blinked and December was almost over.  I was so happy with getting decorations and everything done right after Thanksgiving – thinking I had all the time in the world to enjoy.  It absolutely flew by! This time of year is the time to reflect on the year past and make goals and plans for the next.  This year, overall, was a really good year – running wise.  It started out rather slowly, but ended great. January 2017 race season started out in Key West as it has for the 3 previous years.  However, after 3 consecutive years of doing the half marathon – I changed over to the 5K.  I had tweaked my knee – and kept tweaking it on the ice.  (Not running – but, just sliding while walking).  So, I … {Continue Reading… }

Ode To The Stuff Holder

Yesterday was a big day for me – it was the 32nd year of my running every day!  I can’t believe that it’s been that long – it’s hard for me to believe that I’m that old – but, I am! I went for a 10 mile run and spent a lot of time during the run reflecting on the past 32 years of my streak running – and the 7 years before that when I started running.  I thought about the runs, the races, the ones that I’ve run with.  It was a great time of reflecting. A Month In The Life Of A Streaking Runner – Day 6

Friday, October 6 – 12 miles Today was long run day!  I started doing my long runs a while back on Fridays.  It really seems to work for me.  I like that it gets my weekend started right and on Thursdays I can fix a nice pasta dinner for Hubby and me. For the past year or so, I’ve been doing my long runs on some of the greenways around here.  I sometimes start and finish on the greenway – but, may hit the road for some miles.  It all depends on the miles that I am doing. The greenway that I start my longer runs on starts at a place called Fallon Park.  There are runners and cyclists that start there.  I like starting there because there is a port-a-potty right there.  On the greenway, there are a couple – but, I like having one right there before I … {Continue Reading… }

A Month In The Life Of A Streaking Runner – Day 5

Thursday, October 5 On the schedule today was an easy 4 mile run before my long run of the week tomorrow. Hubby was having carpal tunnel surgery at 8:15 a.m. – so, that meant up at 4 a.m. to get the run in before having to have him at the hospital early. I’ve run many mornings at that time due to one thing or another.  I know that some people may have just punted their run – but, that’s not the way that streakers are wired.  You get up as early as you need to get the run done.  There are some that would wait and run later.  I’ve never liked to do that.  You never know what’s going to happen during the day.  So, I always get it done first thing. A Month In The Life Of A Streaking Runner – Day 4

Wednesday, October 4 Usually I am up before the sun to get my run in for the day.  Today, I had an early doctor’s appointment to do a retest – so, I decided to be lazy and sleep in until 6:15 and do my run after my appointment.  Yep, that’s sleeping in for me! After my appointment, I had to do some things for Hubby for the DQ, so I didn’t get out to run until almost 11:00.  On the positive side – it was in the mid 50’s by then instead of the lower 40’s of the morning. Today’s schedule was an easy 5 miler.  Went to my “trail” and did part on the trail – and part on another side road that is close by.  This road is where I do my hill work outs.  But, today, I just did the half mile uphill and then back down. … {Continue Reading… }

A Month In The Life Of A Streaking Runner – Day 3

Tuesday, October 3 Today was speed work day.  For speed work today – I did 1/4 mile repeats.  What this means is that after a warm up of easy running (1 1/2 miles), I started doing intervals.  1/4 mile faster with 1/4 mile recovery (slower running).  Today called for 6 of these.  So, 6 X 1/4 mile repeats.  Followed by a slower run for a cool down. Where I ran today is called Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail.  Trail is using the term loosely.  I am not a fan of trail running – rocks and tree roots are not fun in my klutzy world!    But, this trail is finely crushed gravel – much easier!  I did my warm up on this trail.
